Tax Break for Teachers and Educators
The beginning of the new school year is quickly approaching, and teachers and educators should keep in mind that they still have time to write off some unreimbursed expenses. When submitting a tax return, a tax break for teachers and educators can be availed, and the amount of tax owed can be decreased by deducting costs for things like travel, training, and instructional materials.
The taxpayer must be a kindergarten through grade 12 teacher, instructor, counselor, principal, or aide to qualify for the deduction. They must also work at least 900 hours per school year in an elementary or secondary school, as defined by state law.
Teachers and other educators can also take advantage of various education tax breaks for continuing education, such as the Lifetime Learning Credit or, in some cases, the American Opportunity Tax Credit, depending on their circumstances.
How the Tax Break for Teachers and Educators Works
For unreimbursed business expenses in 2022, educators are permitted a $300 deduction. If both spouses are eligible educators and file a joint tax return, they are allowed a deduction of up to $600 or $300 each. The educator expense deduction is available even if the teacher doesn’t itemize their deductions. The taxpayer must work at least 900 hours in a school year as an elementary or secondary school as defined by law, as a kindergarten through grade 12 teacher, instructor, counselor, principal, or aide, in order to qualify for this deduction.
Those who qualify can deduct the costs of books, supplies, computer equipment, and software, classroom equipment, and supplementary materials. Participation in professional development courses is also tax deductible. Athletic supplies are eligible if they are used for health or physical education courses.
Keep Good Records
Educators should keep detailed records of qualifying expenses, noting the date, amount, and purpose of each purchase. This will help to avoid missing a tax deduction. Taxpayers should keep a copy of their tax returns for at least three years. Tax returns may be required for a variety of reasons. The IRS provides free tax transcripts that summarize return information and include adjusted gross income.
