Requesting a Tax Transcript From the IRS
The key to getting a tax refund as soon as possible is to file a tax return with no mistakes and set up the direct deposit for receiving a refund. The fastest and easiest way to see account information like estimated tax payments, adjusted gross income from the previous year, and economic impact payment amounts is by requesting a tax transcript and using Online Account on the IRS website. Those who don’t already have an account will have to set one up.
Taxpayers can also ask for a free copy of their tax transcript. There are five kinds of transcripts that exist:
- Verification of Non-filing Letter
- Tax Return Transcript
- Tax Account Transcript
- Record of Account Transcript
- Wage and Income Transcript
The taxpayer should look at each type of transcript to see which one meets their needs best. If you need help with this, don’t be afraid to call our office.
You can use IRS transcripts to look for signs of fraud. But getting a transcript won’t tell you when you will get your money back. The Where’s My Refund? tool gives the most up-to-date information about whether or not the IRS has received a tax return and whether or not the refund has been approved or sent.
To protect taxpayers’ identities, the transcripts hide some information that could be used to find out who they are, like names, addresses, and Social Security numbers. All financial entries are fully visible.
Taxpayers can request Tax Transcript in three ways:
Online. People can look at their tax records in their Online Account or by going to Get Transcript Online, where they can view, print, or download all types of transcripts.
By mail. With Get Transcript by Mail, taxpayers can get a copy of their tax return or tax account transcript in 5–10 calendar days. They can also send any type of transcript request on Form 4506-T. Most Form 4506-T requests for transcripts are handled in 10 business days and then sent by mail. On the page for Forms, Instructions, and Publications on IRS.gov, you can find Form 4506-T.
Calling. Taxpayers can call the IRS’s automated phone transcript service at 800-908-9946 to get a tax return or tax account transcript sent by mail within 5–10 calendar days.
